Why submit? So, your friend wants to know why you write. As simple as it seems, this question is very complicated, more than one might expect. Someone asked me this question and I had to think about it. If you can believe, while I constantly ask myself this question as well I am never quite satisfied with my answer. But when someone else is involved, when they ask you—why do you write—you give them an answer. You write because something inside you feels better when you do (that's the touchy-feely answer). Okay, you write because you have something to say, it's your purpose (that's the type-A driven answer). Or maybe you write because since you were a kid there were all these stories in your head, you have an out-of-this-world imagination; you just want to put on the page what you've created in your head and writing is more than a skill—it's art (the artistic or artsy-fartsy mentality). You think that living is hell and the only way to cope with it is to write—in order to make sense of the crazy merry-go-round we call life (the fatalist or is that pessimist?). I could go on—but I won't. I don't know why you write but if you submit your best work (the kind of story, prose, or poetry we'll read more than once and think—wow—each time) we'll understand why you write. Submit your work and we will carefully consider it for our magazine. Thank you in advance for wowing us! Trace Sheridan |
We Want It All We want to read your fiction and poetry, and we want to see your artwork and photography. For fiction and poetry paste one short story or one poem into the text of an email, or attach your work in a Word document, rtf, or txt. Limit your short story to 2000 words or less. We accept simultaneous submissions but please tell us when submitting and let us know if your story or poem is accepted by another publication. For artwork & photography (including comics, graphic novel excerpts, and cartoons) send us an email attachment of a jpg file no bigger than 500kb. We are looking for black and white and colour photos, and art that challenges boundaries, that’s stunning, brilliant, beautiful, and juxtaposes parallels overlooked by the average eye (smile). Write a cover letter telling us a little about your life, your writing or art, and where we can see some of your other work. Make sure your email subject header contains the word "submission" with the title of your work and your name. Submissions without this run the risk of being accidentally deleted as spam. After sending us your submission wait until we respond before submitting again. We will respond as quickly as possible, between one and four months. We don’t comment or make suggestions. We may modify these guidelines from time to time so check us out each time you submit.
Small print All submissions must be your own work and previously unpublished. 34thParallel does not charge reading fees for submissions. At the moment, payment to authors is made with a complimentary contributor copy of the magazine in PDF format. The magazine is copyrighted but the rights to fiction and poetry remain with the authors. Acceptance for our printed publication means we have first North American serial rights (which means we are the first magazine on this continent to publish your piece). With consent, we may ask to include your work in a printed anthology. Following publication, all other rights revert to you.
